According to his Twitter account, Hill-Murray star defenseman Blake Heinrich has committed to UMD.
Heinrich sent out a tweet that read “Officially a Bulldog” on Wednesday night, confirming rumors that he had been seriously interested in UMD. During the NCAA tournament, Heinrich made it known that his college hockey allegiance was firmly rooted in Duluth.
Only a junior, the 6-foot, 185-pound blue-liner had 11 goals and 35 points for the Pioneers during the 2011-12 season, helping them to a second-place finish in the Class 2A state tournament this winter. Heinrich definitely left his mark on the big school tournament, earning All-Tournament honors while registering a single assist and countless game-changing hits.
Check back soon for further updates on Heinrich.
Newly-signed J.T. Brown burst onto the NHL scene with a successful debut on Saturday night, registering two shots and 13 minutes, 33 seconds of ice-time for Tampa Bay in the Lightning’s 3-2 shootout win over Winnipeg.
Brown skated mostly with NHL veterans Ryan Malone — a St. Cloud State alum — and Vincent Lecavalier. Brown’s best chance came just 2 minutes, 45 seconds into the game, when he skated behind the Winnipeg net off a draw and made a hit to loosen up the puck before finding a soft spot in the coverage low in the slot. Brown grabbed a bouncing puck and threw it on goal from point-blank range, but couldn’t beat Jets’ goalie Ondrej Pavelec.
Lightning coach Guy Boucher was impressed with Brown’s first game, saying that Brown “played great.”
Here’s what Brown had to say following his first NHL contest.
UMD fans hoping to catch Brown in action with Tampa Bay will have that chance on Monday night. The Lightning host Washington at 6 p.m., and the game will be televised nationally by NBC Sports Network.
